Teaching Philosophy
My central goal as a piano educator is to cultivate enthusiasm, fulfillment, and a lifelong appreciation for music in my students. It is my mission not only to impart musical knowledge, but also to learn from every student. I see all my students as individuals, and delight in getting to know each of them, and their interests and aspirations. I strive to understand and respect my students’ unique needs, and tailor each lesson to best aid them in progressing towards their goals.

It is my philosophy that teaching music is like teaching a whole new language, and I guide my students through numerous areas of study to teach them ways of musical expression and communication. Besides learning the physical techniques of piano playing, rhythmic proficiency, notational literacy, and musical artistry, my students become well-rounded musicians with exposure to various genres of music, aural training, music theory, sight reading, collaborative experiences, and pertinent historical information.

All educational areas I emphasize add to my students’ evolution into becoming confident and bright musicians. Many life skills are also gained along the way of a piano education such as discipline, patience, time management, focus, awareness, coordination, critical listening, and creativity. Ultimately, my students will develop the intellectual tools and independence required to be their own teacher, and the self-confidence and passion to share music with others.

Finally, I believe that playing piano should always be a positive experience, and I strive to create a comfortable, encouraging, fun, and honest learning environment for all students. In lessons, my students can expect to dance, sing, and laugh with me, while learning the joys of playing piano.
